The present Qing dynasty covered box is carved from a single piece of Hetian green jade. The jade is fine-grained and lustrous, with a subdued and elegant tone and a thick, naturally matured patina across the surface. The box and cover are precisely fitted with a well-constructed recessed rim, while the rounded body is meticulously shaped and finely polished.
The cover is embellished with a shallow relief carving of Guanyin. The Buddhist deity is portrayed with a serene and compassionate expression, her flowing robes rendered with graceful movement. The carving is executed with confident and refined workmanship, with gently articulated layers that give the figure a lively yet tranquil presence.
Conceived as an elegant scholar's desk accessory, the box could have been used to store jewellery, sutras or other precious objects, bringing devotional symbolism into the realm of refined Chinese decorative arts. It combines practical function with aesthetic appreciation.
Qing dynasty jade carving placed particular emphasis on the quality of the material and the skill of the workmanship. With its fine Hetian jade, accomplished carving and well-preserved condition, the present covered box is an elegant and noteworthy example of Qing dynasty jade craftsmanship and a desirable object for collectors of Chinese jade.
